I just can't believe that as the Winston- Salem Journal published an article regarding the copious amounts of black ice throughout the city, Wake Forest decided that the safety of off-campus students, faculty and staff was of little importance compared to staying on schedule. I knew the administration lacked empathy, but this is getting to the point of neglect and endangerment.

I am honored Professor Audi would comment on my essays. Lots of points here, too many to address individually. But here is just a brief note:
My essays are intended for, and apply to, the great majority of religious folks, not for a handful of academics who take a more nuanced view of things. I do not fear that Audi has enough respect for evidence to take science seriously (even if his standards of evidence may change subtly and inconsistently when religious matters are at issue). The vast majority of theists do accept the DCT--if unreflectively--and are disposed to a hostile and irrational position on science because they realize on some level that they have to compartmentalize in order to, on the one hand, believe in penicillin and fly in airplanes, and, on the other, take the story of Noah or Jesus primarily on an ancient text written by anonymous desert-dwelling cultists.

It should also be noted that I'm from the South and clearly am not used to copious amounts of ice and snow. With that being said, I know plenty of students from up North that had little to no issues with the weather. It really depends on what you're used to, how you prepare for snow storms, if you know how to drive in the snow and ice, if you have the proper footwear, the proper vehicle, etc.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I myself live off campus, too, and experienced a similar problem as you did (my car was literally frozen in my driveway. Fortunately, though, I am within walking distance). I highly encourage you to contact facilities and the university police and report this information to them. Also, please feel free to write an opinion piece for our Opinion section for all to read. I absolutely understand where you are coming from provided that you certainly are not the only student to be complaining about the off-campus conditions. I do agree that Polo Road was very icy and very dangerous to be driven on. Unfortunately, walking is not as convenient an option as it is for others. Though maintenance was done to the roads and sidewalks, it was still very risky to be driving and walking around in the icy winter conditions. In fact, I slipped three times walking to campus one night. Definitely not fun.

While I appreciate your research and understand your explanation of why we had delays as opposed to days off of school, I would like to air my grievances with how the situation was handled. I live off campus. While I chose this living situation, it must be noted that not every student can live on campus due to space issues and therefore the university MUST cater to those of us who live off campus. Monday I was frightened to drive to school. While Polo Road and Reynolda were fine, my street, Wake Drive and the surrounding roads were still covered in ice. It was to such an extent that my tires spun and my car slid frighteningly close to a ditch as I traveled to the more well trafficked roads. I have spoken to many students who experienced the same issue. So here lies my question. How thoroughly did the WFU police survey the roads of Winston Salem before determining only a delay was necessary? Additionally, I would like to commend the facilities workers of Wake Forest for working hard to clear the internal roads and parking lots of our campus. However, I myself fell while walking through the Martin parking lot, and over the past 3 days I have witnessed several other students wipe out. Granted I have no broken bones only bruises, but I still feel campus was not adequately prepared for students after the snow.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. ALE is a menace more than a help. As a certified EMT and an overage student I find their actions deplorable. The officers are rude, snarky, and have huge god complexes. Their actions do not aid to prevent underage drinking. If anything it only encourages students to consume all of their alcohol before the event. This is extremely dangerous! The students consume large quantities of alcohol in a small period of time. The way that ALE has handled events recently (including football tailgates) is absolutely unacceptable.
