No. 2-ranked men’s soccer persevered through two decidedly different games versus Maryland and Davidson to pick up a pair of victories that extends their winning steak to eight games. The Deacons, winner of seven of their eight games, first took on the then No.5-ranked Maryland Terrapins in a showdown of perhaps the two most dominant college teams of this decade.

The Wake Forest volleyball team continued their inconsistent play this past week when they dropped two ACC matches. On Oct. 23, the team played Georgia Tech. The Deacs lost the match in three sets. The loss moved Wake to 5-5 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets are now 8-2.

Torrential downpours and high winds were the least of the Deacons’ problems when the traveled to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Oct. 24 to take on the Navy Midshipmen. Just like last year’s regular season matchup, the Deacon football team could not stop Navy’s triple option attack and fell to the Midshipmen 13-10 to fall to 4-4 on the season, putting their bid for a fourth straight bowl appearance in serious jeopardy.

For years now the Old Gold & Black has featured Wake’s finest athletes in this spot, putting them “In the Spotlight.” In doing so, we have overlooked the people that play the biggest roles in their lives here on campus: the coaches. Wake Forest athletics have fostered a family atmosphere and the coaches are at the heart of that community. The large majority of the coaches have been here for a number of years and have been instrumental in the program’s rise to national prominence. Now it is Mike Petersen’s time to shine “In the Spotlight.”
