Seeing Spain: The first excursion…

Betty J. Ogburn/Old Gold & Black

Three weeks ago from yesterday, I embarked on the grandest adventure of my life when I left Greensboro, N.C. and, after a series of flights from Raleigh to JFK to Madrid, ended up in Salamanca, Spain…It hasn’t even been a month and classes (of which I have Monday through Thursday) have barely started, but I’ve already seen and done much more than I ever have in a semester at Wake!!…

weekend, me and the rest of my group went on our first official excursion to four cities: Ávila, Toledo, Segovia, and, best of all, Madrid!!…Granted, I can’t talk about everything I’ve seen in one little post, so I’ll just highlight my favorite sights from each city…

Ávila–La Muralla (The Wall)

Built in the 11th century, the muralla was built to separate the wealthy from the ”uncivilized” members of the poor, agrarian class…And of course, like all walls, it had defensive purposes as well…From atop the muralla, I was able to get some spectacular views of the city

Toledo–La Catedral (The Cathedral)

Toledo is another gorgeous ancient city that has what I think is the most beautiful cathedral I’ve seen so far in my young life…Completed in 1493, this place is full of treasures…No, seriously–there’s a room filled with valuable objects made from precious metals/stones, and rooms filled with works by masters such as Carvaggio, Raphael, Rubens, Titian, and, of course, El Greco (who lived in Toledo, and painted for this church)…

Segovia–El Alcázar (A type of fortalized castle)

Constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries–and allegedly the inspiration for Cinderella’s castle (bonus points, right there!!), the alcázar was a favorite place of residency for the Spanish monarchy…Within it, there’s an armory, a basilica, and even the throne room and bed chamber of Fernando and Isabel, the first monarchs of a unified Spain…
