The Lumineers bring folk rock to the forefront
“I belong with you, you belong with me you’re my sweetheart.” Sound familiar? These are the famous lyrics of the latest fold rock hit, “Ho, Hey” by The Lumineers. This indie/folk rock group has managed to rise to the top of the music world in less than a year.

Their first album, The Lumineers, dropped in April of 2012. As of January this year, their single, “Ho Hey” was number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The Lumineers had an interesting yet speedy rise to fame. They played in New York City for a few years until they got discouraged and realized no developments were being made. Instead of heading to California, these guys thought outside the box and headed to Denver, Colo. So off they went to Denver with nothing but a few suitcases and a whole lot of musical instruments. It was in Denver that their luck finally changed. Some music producers saw their tremendous talent and serious potential in their song that would become a huge hit “Ho Hey” recorded in an attic on YouTube. They signed a record deal and the rest is history.
These days, it seems that a lot of popular music is just a bunch of computerized crap (sorry, but think about it). Anyway, it is so nice that the latest craze is a talented folk rock band. Their instruments include guitar, piano, bass, percussion, drums, and cello. Their long list of instruments creates a unique and lovely sound. While they use various instruments, their songs are quite simple. It is important to remember that there is no correlation between quality and complexity of music. Sometimes the simplest music is the best music. Their sound is both uplifting and calming; I would call it feel-good music.
While their music is defined as indie rock and as folk rock, I would categorize them as only folk rock. There seems to be a folk revival happening with all these folk rock groups rising to the top: The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, and many more. Folk rock is a great change of pace and I hope it sticks around.
Personally, I am a huge Lumineers fan. I think their rise to instant fame is incredible and I hope to see another album here pretty soon. So if you haven’t yet, give their album a listen!
