The Old Gold & Black editorial staff would like to thank Professor Wayne King for being our newspaper adviser for many years and wish him well after his retirement. He was a very supportive adviser who allowed us to be independent and let us grow as a student newspaper on campus.

If you’ve seen any R-rated movie, or watched much T.V. in the last few weeks, then you may have seen the trailer for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the sequel to the 1987 classic Wall Street. Anyone who has heard of this Oliver Stone- directed film knows the infamous line, spoken by corporate raider Gordon Gekko, “Greed… is good.” Oliver Stone is a well-known liberal, and no doubt aimed to gleefully point out the sins and transgressions of the financial industry, and our economic system, in Wall Street. However, did he get it right? Did Stone accurately capture the zeitgeist of the ‘80s with that line?

The Republican Party made a strong challenge and fought hard for their conservative ideals, but pundits and critics believed Obama had won the election conclusively enough to go forward with his ambitious mandate of change, despite some of its bold and controversial facets.
